Nordic Skating, Vällen & Ekoln, Jan 21st

Not as great as last weekend on Båven, but still a very nice morning. Joined by my brother, we started off on Northern Vällen, where the ice was half-decent but still enjoyable. After that, we drove to Ryssvägen and took a lap north on Ekoln with a bit smoother ice. Total distance for the day was 38 kilometres.

Nordic Skating, Lake Mälaren, Jan 31st

Morning session on Lake Mälaren with Ricky, starting from Bålsta.. Excellent ice conditions, but unfortunately the route became restricted by open water to the south-west and a shipping-lane on the east.. We covered around 20 kilometers, lots of fun!

XC-Skating, Lake Mälaren, Jan 10th

Cold weather for some week now which has frozen many larger and deeper lakes, but this also brought a lot of snow.. We headed to Varpsund in the northern part of Lake Mälaren for some powder-skating in loop north towards Gorran and Ekoln.. Gradually thinner ice and at Lugnet/Månskär we had to turn around, rounding the island Biskops-Arnö on the way back..

XC-Skating, Sörmland, Feb 15th

XC-Skating on 4 lakes in Sörmland with Emil: Yngern, Sjundasjön, Klämmingen and Lake Mälaren at the Gripsholm Castle.. Ice conditions not great but still enjoyable.. Low pace, I'm just recovering from a major cold..

XC-Skating, Skokloster/Ekoln, Feb 9th

Sunday morning solo xc-skating, starting from Skokloster Camping and heading north.. With more than a week of temperatures above freezing plus a fair bit of rain, all snow is now gone and the ice on the lakes is clear and covered with a thin layer of water.. Being solo, and still recovering from a very bad cold, I kept the pace low but it was still great to be out and enjoy these magical conditions..

XC-Skiing and XC-Skating on Lake Mälaren, Feb 1st

Headed out solo for some winter magic on Lake Mälaren.. Started at Varpsund in the southern end of Ryssviken and headed north up towards Gorran and then back the same route.. About 25% of the trip was on skis and the other 75% on skates.. The ice was 10+ cm with some 5-8 cm of wet snow on top..

Kayaking, Mälaren, May 22nd

Kayaking for a couple of hours in lake Mälaren, rounding the islands Kärsön, Kungshatt and Fågelön, for a total of about 15 kilometres. Mostly sunny day, with a fresh breeze from SSW that gave headwind on the way out and nice tailwind on the way back..

Kayaking, Mälaren, 15th-16th of May

Excellent weekend kayaking trip in the central parts of lake Mälaren together with Emil.. Starting on Saturday from the north side at Hjulstabron, heading counter-clock wise past Gisselholmen and Björktorp to harbor dinner with pizza and pints in Strängnäs.. Camp on a small island north of Stora Rullingen and on Sunday northbound past Bispgrund and Koholmen back to the starting point.. Few boats this early in the season and plenty of wildlife including ospreys, cranes and a snake swimming in a strait..

Kayaking, Adelsö, Mälaren, October 18th

Suberb conditions for late autumn kayaking in Lake Mälaren.. Paddled around Adelsö anti-clockwise together with Emil in about 6 hours with a lunch-stop half-way.. Mostly sunny and moderate winds, where we had shelter on the northbound sections and nice tails winds on the southbound section.. This late in the season there are hardly any disturbing motor boats, but one has to take care with the cold water temperatures..

Kayaking, Mälaren, Sweden, May 3rd

With a delayed delivery of a new folding kayak and an urge to get back on the water, I headed to Pampas with Carin for a couple of hours of city-side paddling on lake Mälaren in a twin seater.. Tried my Greenland style paddle for the first time and it was nice altough the wide hull of this kayak got a bit in the way..

Kayaking, Lake Mälaren, Sweden

A half-day Sunday paddle, first outdoor activity since I crashed on my mountainbike on Malta in early June and fractured my thigh bone and pelvis.. Kayaking solo is a bit of a logistical challenge when still walking with the help of one crutch, but a slow and methodical process during preparations worked fine.. I drove to my regular starting point on Kärsö island and was out for around 3-4 hours.. Some wind and a few rain showers, but still very nice getting out on the water again!
